I drunkenly watched Irish rugby on St Patricks day with some friends and we could not understand how it is not a thing in the US.

It’s actually safer, just like boxing without gloves. Not having padding means that you feel the same impact as the guy you’re hitting, and in the case of boxing, you would break your hand if you hit too hard.
